Even Leaders Need a Coach!
What makes successful program and project leaders and how coaching can accelerate your growth.
In this podcast episode I meet Raquel Horta, exploring what makes a successful project or program manager, the value of coaching for delivery leaders, building a startup and much more.
Raquel is a project & program management coach, consultant and co-founder of a services company. She has over 25 years experience in various roles including development, business analysis, project & program management, operations, strategy and senior executive roles.
Raquel’s goal is to help project and program managers "declutter" their processes, cultivate the right mindset to conquer their challenges and excel, even in the most complex challenges.
Raquel’s current work includes:
Co-founder of a coaching and consultancy firm focused on coaching project and program management talent.
Founder of a service company dedicated to enabling businesses to improve efficiency and productivity.
Active board member providing strategic insights and direction to organisations.
COACHING LEADERS
Coaching Challenges
Highlighting common pitfalls in coaching relationships:
Misunderstanding of coaching vs. training or mentoring, resulting in needs not being met.
Misaligned expectations between coach and client, leading to poor outcomes.
Potential incompatibility between coach and client, leading to relationship breakdowns and time wasted for both parties.
Guidance for Aspiring Coaches
Clearly define your role and how you can help from the outset.
Be flexible in your approach if you have the skills, combining coaching, mentoring, and training as needed. If doing so, ensure it is clear when you are performing each role.
Help clients set their own goals and develop personalised action plans, which the recipient is accountable for.
Ripple Effect of Coaching: Receiving coaching can help project and program professionals to be more at ease with their responsibilities and happier in their work. Happy, motivated project leaders result in more productive teams, increased morale and potentially higher revenue for organisations.
Coaching vs. Mentoring: It's crucial to understand the difference. Coaching focuses on helping clients find their own solutions, while mentoring can focus on sharing personal experiences.
Aligning Expectations: Successful coaching relationships start with clear communication about what coaching is and isn't.
Personalised Approach: Effective coaches help clients develop unique solutions based on their journeys and individual needs, rather than replicating others' experiences.
PM SKILLS FOR START-UPS
For anyone looking to start their own ventures, Raquel suggests:
Honing your planning and organisational skills through project work.
Developing strong leadership and communication abilities.
Practicing adaptability and problem-solving in various project scenarios.
Project / Program Skills Valuable in Running a Business
Core Skills: Project management skills like scheduling, planning, risk assessment and stakeholder management are invaluable when starting a business.
Goal Setting: Defining success criteria and objectives for your company, just as you would for a project, is crucial.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND ANALYSIS
Discussing Raquel’s unique experiences as a Business Analyst, Project Manager and Program Manager.
The value of Business Analysis:
Enhancing project scope definition and management.
Improving decision-making through data-driven insights.
Facilitating smoother transitions and change management.
Working with BAs
Complementary Roles: Business analysis and project management are equally valuable and complementary roles in project teams.
Bridging the Gap: Business analysts play a crucial role in bridging the gaps between business needs and technical solutions.
Requirements Clarity: Strong business analysis skills help ensure project requirements are clear, comprehensive, and aligned with business goals.
Risk Mitigation: Business analysts can identify potential risks and issues early in a delivery lifecycle, helping to prevent costly mistakes.
Stakeholder Communication: Their ability to communicate powerfully with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is invaluable.
Where BA and PM similarities:
Listening carefully to stakeholders. Translating vague ideas into concrete requirements.
Documenting or articulating requirements clearly.
Understanding stakeholder perspectives and opinions.
Underestimated challenges to be conscious of when leading programs:
Galvanising diverse, talented, and opinionated team members towards a common goal.
Clearly articulating business objectives in both measurable and emotive ways.
Building emotional connections to the project's purpose.
Managing expectations of various stakeholders simultaneously.
Some approaches to overcome these challenges:
Being crystal clear about business objectives.
Creating a compelling narrative that resonates emotionally with team members.
Setting and consistently reinforcing expectations with all stakeholders.
Reminding stakeholders of their individual responsibilities towards delivering the expected outcomes.
Project and program managers don't need to be technical experts in the field they're managing. While technical knowledge can be helpful, it's not mandatory.
